Miriam Sorrell is a London-born artist and author based in Gozo, Malta. Her creative career spans painting, mixed-media collage, food writing and design. Her current work centres on an evolving collection she calls Urban Contemporary Renaissance, bringing classical imagery into contemporary compositions marked by fragmentation, texture and expressive brushwork.

Born to a Greek Cypriot father and Greek mother, Miriam spent much of her childhood in Malta. Her Mediterranean upbringing, connection with nature and animals, and longstanding interest in the feminine and sacred imagery have shaped her work throughout her life.

Miriam has held ten solo exhibitions in Malta and Gozo. Internationally, she was selected to participate for three consecutive years in Cancer Research UK’s Art for Life collective exhibitions at Christie’s in London, alongside contributors including David Bowie, Sam Taylor-Wood and Richard Rogers. Her most recent solo exhibition, Saints & Trees, at the Citadel Cultural Centre in Gozo, brought together two enduring strands of her painting: sacred figures and the natural world.

During a period away from visual art, Miriam channelled her creativity into plant-based food, creating the award-winning blog Mouthwatering Vegan and becoming a Random House author. Her publishing work attracted endorsements from Sir Paul McCartney and the President of PETA, and her book Mouthwatering Vegan was presented to 26 members of the United States Congress. Her wider creative and professional life has also encompassed poetry, jewellery design and work as a UK-qualified holistic practitioner.

Following Saints & Trees, her exploration of mixed-media collage marked a turning point in her artistic practice. Reinterpretations of the Mona Lisa became central to a growing body of work with a more overtly provocative, irreverent and subversive character. Miriam describes this discovery as finding “an artistic language that sustains my soul.”

Miriam is now introducing this new body of work to a wider audience while continuing to expand the collection. It marks an unfolding chapter in her career, as she develops a newly discovered artistic language and seeks opportunities to share it with galleries, curators and collectors.
